TideView is an innovative AR application for the iPhone that provides users with a 3D visual representation of tidal patterns, allowing for an interactive experience with tidal flows. This app presents users the capability to predict water levels at present, in 12 hours, and even project them 80 years into the future.

Similar to other tidal monitoring applications, TideView utilizes the user’s current location to identify nearby tidal stations that report sea level data every six minutes. Users can select their preferred date, time, and tidal station, ensuring that the information reflects local conditions accurately. By positioning the phone at the water's edge, the app calculates the horizontal plane of the beach, subsequently displaying the projected tidal levels for the next 12 hours relative to that baseline. The augmented reality feature visualizes this data through a 3D arch, which represents water levels in relation to both above and below ground, enhancing understanding of the current tide cycle. Users can freely navigate around this visualization or rotate it as desired. Moreover, an aiming crosshair feature facilitates precise analysis of specific locations by enabling users to gauge whether areas, such as kayak camping spots, will be submerged during high tide.

TideView also serves as a valuable tool for understanding the implications of global warming on sea levels. By permitting users to adjust predictions over the next century, one can observe potential future water levels and their effects on properties, such as coastal condos in Florida. This dynamic feature allows real-time visualizations as adjustments are made, providing insights into future flood risks for properties even decades down the line.

  • Data sourced from NOAA, ensuring accuracy.
  • Access to tide stations within a 200-mile radius.
  • Functionality aligned with current time zones.
  • Displays current high tide and low tide levels.
  • Includes projections for sea level rise from 2020 to 2100.
  • Dynamically reads feet below high tide line with camera level crosshairs.

Disclaimer: It is important to note that measuring tide levels can be imprecise and is influenced by a variety of local factors. Users should not rely solely on this application for critical life decisions.
